Galaxy Playing Cards

Galaxy Playing Cards began as a self-initiated project for my EPQ, exploring how graphic design and structural packaging could enhance the usability and performance of a traditional playing card deck. The card graphics were designed specifically for cardistry, prioritising bold contrast, rhythm, and visual flow to perform strongly in fans, spreads, and flourishes.

Central to the project is a custom tuck box featuring an integrated pull-tab mechanism, designed to make removing the cards easier and more intuitive. This usability-led intervention addresses a common friction point in standard card packaging while remaining visually cohesive and unobtrusive.

Following the EPQ, the project was further refined and taken to market through my own brand, supported by a customer base developed through previous Kickstarter-funded projects. The deck was sold through online and retail channels, transforming an academic exploration into a commercially viable, performance-driven product.

This project reflects a holistic approach to design, combining cardistry-focused graphic design, human-centred packaging, and real-world production, where visual identity and usability are developed in parallel.
